Rachel stands outside the house when they arrive, face pale.

“I’m returning your boy,” the man says.

Rachel grabs at the buttons of Abe’s shirt, right at the tea stain. “The gate was closed,” she says. “The gate was closed!”

Distracted by their faces, Abe murmurs a reassurance. Rachel and the man. The dark hair. So unlike his. Where are their faces? Why will no one in this neighborhood show their face? Too similar. And look at how they smile at each other, so knowingly.

Musty air pushes in from the walls of homes all around him. Standing-water air. There is no space here, in this city. It’s unnatural to live like this, away from cars, from shops, from culture. YOU CAN’T LET HER TAKE YOU BACK IN THERE.

The sagging clouds gather, yet somehow Rachel and the man’s dark hair still burn in the harsh sunlight. He feels it on his own scalp. It always burned like that when he had to pause under the desert sun to show his military papers. Papers. Rachel must have documents somewhere. Things leave a trail. The trail of water behind the ship that delivered him to Venice. He would have to go back into the house and look. BUT SHE WOULD KNOW. ALWAYS HOVERING OVER HIM, ALWAYS LURKING.
